Petroleum is a unique natural mineral. Oil refining is a process developed in several stages of physical and chemical processing of crude oil, the result of which is the production of a complex of petroleum products. Oil companies around the world are modernizing their refineries as best they can to achieve greater success and economic growth in their operations.


In Pyrlitsa Ungheni, in 2008, we built and commissioned a new mini-refinery. The refinery’s oil and gas condensate capacity is 100,000 tons / year. The operating Mini Refinery is designed to process both gas condensate and oil with different densities.

Until now, the plant was operated by processing gas condensate. The products produced were gasoline, diesel fractions and fuel oil. But since the plant specialized in the processing of gas condensate, there were difficulties both with the supply of the raw material itself and with the sale of fuel oil that has specific quality characteristics and was suitable only for combustion, and we faced sales problems and the lack of consumers.

Currently, the market demand has slightly changed, there is a shortage of high-quality road bitumen and oil products that meet the EURO-5 standards.

For this reason, it was decided to redesign the plant for the production of road bitumen, as a result of which, to replace the processing of scarce gas condensate with the processing of heavy high-viscosity asphalt-resinous oil of the Volga, West Ukrainian, Persian and Venezuelan basins.

The transition to a new type of more accessible and cheaper raw materials will make it possible, with a slight modernization of the existing plant and the inclusion of an additional new oil refining complex in its technological cycle, to produce highly liquid products:

  • road bitumen;

  • vacuum gas oil;

  • straight-run gasoline;

  • straight-run diesel.

The new refinery complex will consist of the following process units:

  • An atmospheric unit for oil rectification (produced products – straight-run gasoline and diesel fractions, fuel oil);

  • A vacuum unit for fuel oil rectification (manufactured products – diesel fraction, vacuum gas oil and tar);

  • Tar oxidation units (manufactured products – bitumen).

Also, the general technological complex will include a tank farm and a technological infrastructure for receiving raw materials and unloading the finished product to the consumer, both by road and rail tank cars.

Thus, there will be a single common closed technological cycle.

The capacity of the additional complex for processed oil will be 180,000 tons / year. The total processing volume will be approximately 280,000 tons / year. (If necessary, the volume of product processing can be reduced by 20-25%).

The output of finished marketable products will be (estimatedly):

  • Straight-run diesel fuel 50.000 t / year;

  • Straight-run gasoline 31,000 t / year;

  • Vacuum gas oil 88.000 t / year.

  • Road bitumen 105.000 t / year.

The commissioning period for a new oil refining complex is 1 year from the start of financing.

In the second stage of construction, it is planned to introduce a technological unit for hydrotreating and hydrocracking of severe mode, isomerization and hydrogen production, which will make it possible to process the entire product of vacuum gas oil, straight-run and gasoline fractions into diesel fuel and gasoline that meets the EURO-5 standards. (That is, diesel and gasoline fractions from two technological units of both facilities will also be processed into commercial types of gasoline and diesel fuel). The commissioning period for the second stage of construction of secondary processing processes is 1 year from the beginning of financing.
